How to choose the right business server among HPE, Dell and Lenovo: real decision criteria, not a brand catalogue.

Picking the right brand for a business server isn't a nine-way beauty contest: it's the vendor that best matches how many users you have, what workload the server needs to carry, and how much support you actually need. Companies that contact us about a server often aren't starting from a blank page: they're coming from an IT setup that hasn't convinced them — slow, unreliable, more complicated or costly than they'd like — and are looking for something leaner, more affordable and more efficient. The questions to ask before you look at brands
Before looking at brands, it's worth answering five questions about your own business — the right brand follows from these answers, not the other way round.
How many users and services does the server need to carry? A server for 10-15 workstations running a single line-of-business app and a file share has very different needs from one that has to carry a hundred users, email, an ERP and a production database at the same time. This question also determines the right form factor — tower, rack, blade or virtual — which we cover in our guide to choosing a business server; here we focus on which brand to pick once the form factor is clear.
Do you need to run several virtual machines on the same host? If the host needs to run several virtual machines side by side — a Windows Server domain controller, a virtualised firewall, a Linux-based application — CPU core count, ample RAM and fast storage matter more than any single physical machine's spec sheet: the sluggish virtual machines clients report to us are often tied to exactly these variables being undersized for the real workload, more than to the software running on top. A server sized at the bare minimum costs less upfront and more later, in poor performance and an early upgrade. How is backup handled, and how long does it take to bring the server back up from an image, if you need to? A RAID array protects against a single failed drive, not against a power surge that takes down the whole controller, or ransomware that encrypts everything on it: these are among the most recurring reasons clients contact us asking for a restore from backup. What matters here is the number of available drive bays, hardware RAID support, a UPS and redundant power supplies to reduce the risk upstream — but above all, how long it takes to get back up and running from a backup image, and whether that's ever actually been tested.
What response time do you actually need if something breaks? A single-site office can tolerate a few hours of downtime far better than a warehouse running multiple shifts or a medical practice. This is where brand matters indirectly: what changes is the availability of on-site warranty parts and the reach of the authorised service network in your area, not the logo itself.
What's the budget, and how many years does the investment need to last? A server sized with room to grow costs more upfront but delays an early replacement; a server bought at the bare minimum is fine only if the business accepts revisiting its infrastructure sooner rather than later.
The answers to these questions — not the manufacturer's name — are the starting point of every server project we run with our clients, often companies coming from exactly one of these problems and looking for infrastructure that's leaner and more efficient than what they had.
HPE: when it makes sense
HPE ProLiant servers — the rack-optimised DL line, the tower-based ML line — are the go-to choice for companies that want full out-of-band remote management: iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) lets you power on and off, reinstall the operating system and monitor the hardware remotely even when the server is powered down or unresponsive, which matters if you don't have a technician on site at all times. HPE also spans everything from the small office (ProLiant ML) to heavier workloads (ProLiant DL, up to the high-availability lines), which lets you stay on the same management ecosystem as the business grows and a second or third server comes into play. For companies that would rather not tie up capital in a purchase, HPE also offers GreenLake, a consumption-based as-a-service model for on-premises infrastructure.
The trade-off: on more recent configurations, some advanced management features (iLO Advanced, some predictive-analytics functions) require additional licensing — a cost to factor into the overall budget, not just the hardware price. In practice: HPE is the brand we recommend most often when a company doesn't have a technician permanently on site and needs to be able to intervene remotely even if the operating system itself is unresponsive.
Dell: when it makes sense
Dell PowerEdge servers are a reference point for companies that want a broad catalogue and flexible configurations, from entry-level towers to high-density racks, with delivery times that are often fast thanks to strong distribution channels. Remote management via iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) is comparable to iLO in functionality; OpenManage helps when you need to monitor several Dell servers together, useful once your server fleet grows and checking each machine individually stops being practical.
The trade-off: as with HPE, some advanced management features (iDRAC Enterprise/Datacenter) are licensed separately; and the sheer breadth of the catalogue can slow down the initial choice if you don't already have a clear configuration in mind, without the support of someone who configures Dell servers every day. In practice: Dell is often the fastest option to source when you need tight delivery times or a non-standard configuration that's already well handled through established distribution channels.
Lenovo: when it makes sense
Lenovo ThinkSystem servers inherit the engineering know-how of IBM's x86 server division, acquired in 2014, and often remain the option with the best performance-to-list-price ratio at a matched configuration — a factor that matters for budget-conscious SMEs that still don't want to give up remote management (XClarity) and enterprise-grade reliability. It's a solid choice for companies coming from the Dell or HPE world that want to stay with a mainstream vendor without paying for the more premium positioning.
The trade-off: the authorised service network is historically less extensive in some regions than Dell's or HPE's, something worth checking case by case when very tight on-site response times are required. In practice: Lenovo is the brand we evaluate most often when budget is a stated constraint but the business still won't compromise on remote management and enterprise-grade reliability.

Supermicro: for specific needs
Supermicro operates on a different model from the other three: a very broad catalogue of build-to-order configurations — drives, GPUs, expansion cards — that we consider when a project starts from a precise technical requirement, such as high-capacity storage or a multi-GPU node for artificial intelligence, rather than a like-for-like replacement of an existing server. It doesn't have a remote-management suite as mature or widespread as iLO or iDRAC, and support typically runs through the integrator — us, in this case — rather than a direct, extensive manufacturer service network: one more reason to leave the configuration choice to whoever installs it.
What about the other brands?
Cisco, Oracle, Fujitsu, Asus and Acer also make business servers, and it's not unusual to find them already installed at companies that come to us for support. We support them when they're already part of a client's infrastructure, but they're not the brands we build a new project around: for a company starting from scratch, we work mainly with HPE, Dell and Lenovo, with Supermicro for more specific needs, because those are the brands where we have direct supply channels, parts availability and configuration expertise.
