The technology behind Initpc in 2019
When this post was first published, the store ran on an infrastructure we had designed for performance and scalability:
- Nginx as reverse proxy and caching layer, to cut response times;
- Apache2 as the web server handling dynamic content;
- VMware ESXi as the virtualization platform, running several virtual machines to keep the service available;
- HAProxy to balance the load across servers, Varnish to cache the most requested content and pfSense to protect the network;
- WooCommerce as the e-commerce platform, with a proprietary CRM for order management and customer service, plus custom development for the shopping experience.
How the project has grown since then
The work did not stop there. Our technical collaboration with Initpc.it began in 2006 and continues today: over twenty years the store has moved through five sales platforms (osCommerce, Zen Cart, Magento, Magento 2 and WooCommerce) and the catalogue has grown to more than 280,000 products. Along the way the infrastructure moved to Proxmox VE with one virtual machine per role, search moved to Elasticsearch, and a proprietary ERP now normalizes supplier price lists and keeps prices and stock aligned across the site and the marketplaces. Product pages for around 160,000 items were generated and checked with Hector AI, and the legacy URLs were mapped and redirected at every migration instead of being lost.
